The Abul Khair Health Care team and volunteers gather before a health camp in 2019

About

Team & Volunteers

Twelve people carry this organization: three in leadership, five on the medical side, two running field programs and campaigns, and volunteers who give their Fridays to registration, crowd management and follow-up.

Abul Khair Welfare Organization has no large payroll and no head office in Dhaka. The leadership group sets the budget and answers for it. The medical group runs the Friday clinic and the mobile camps: the specialist doctors travel from Dhaka for camp days, and the clinic in-charge and health assistant are here every week, which is why patients see the same faces year after year.

The field and programs group runs the mobile health campaigns, the relief distributions and the communications. Volunteers do the work that makes a clinic day possible: setting out benches, registering patients, keeping the queue fair, explaining a prescription to someone who cannot read it, and packing relief parcels the night before a distribution.

Name spellings and job titles have varied between pages of our old website. The list below uses one spelling and one title per person, and each entry is being confirmed with the person concerned before we print anything further about them.

How a clinic day is staffed

A Friday needs at least six people. Two doctors take consultations. The clinic in-charge runs the register and decides the order of the queue. The health assistant takes blood pressure and basic measurements before each consultation. One or two volunteers manage the dispensing table, and one keeps the door, which on a busy morning is the hardest job in the building.

A mobile camp needs more, because everything has to be carried, set up and packed down in a day: the campaign in-charge, a doctor or two, a registrar, dispensers, and volunteers from the village itself who know who has been waiting and who has come a long way.

Nobody in the organization draws a salary from a donation without it appearing in the project budget it belongs to. The full split between program costs and running costs will be published with the first financial report.

One name, one title, one spelling

Our old website printed several of these names two different ways and gave one colleague two different job titles on two different pages. That is a small thing that does real damage: a visitor who notices it starts wondering what else on the page is approximate.

So we are settling it properly. Each person here is being asked to confirm the spelling of their own name, the title they want printed, and whether they consent to their photograph appearing on this website at all. Until somebody has confirmed, the entry says so rather than guessing, and any placeholder you see below is a question waiting for an answer rather than an oversight.

The same applies to the doctors who join a mobile camp for a day. They are named in the report of that camp with their agreement, and not otherwise.

Doctors who travel to us

Our mobile health campaigns bring essential healthcare to poor rural areas of Brahmanbaria, including Nabinagar Upazila, with emergency medications and the help of specialist doctors from Dhaka. Doctors who join a camp are named in the report we publish afterwards.
