Food Support

Food is the first thing a household loses when the work stops. Our Food Support program answers that in four ways: emergency relief, Eid and Ramadan packages, regular rations and cooked meals at community distributions.

Nourishing lives, one meal at a time

Food is not just a necessity; it is the foundation of a healthy and dignified life. At Abul Khair Welfare Organization we are committed to ensuring that no one in our community has to suffer from hunger. Our Food Support program provides essential food supplies to those in need, whether they are struggling families, disaster victims, or individuals who simply cannot afford a meal.

Through planned food distribution we aim to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition while bringing hope to those who need it most. With each package we provide, we make sure that the most vulnerable members of our society, children, the elderly and underprivileged families, have access to basic nutrition.

The link between this program and the clinic is direct and unpleasant. A large share of what our doctors see on a Friday is weakness, anemia and nutritional deficiency in women and children. Medicine treats the symptom. Rice, lentils, oil and eggs treat the cause.

Our key initiatives

Emergency food relief

Natural disasters, economic hardship and unforeseen crises can push families into food insecurity overnight. Our rapid-response food aid makes sure affected families receive essential grocery packages during those weeks. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we provided emergency food and medication relief to 800 families.

Eid relief

Eid is a time of celebration, but for many families it is a period of hardship. We provide special Eid food packages so that households can take part in the festival with dignity, from staple groceries to festive meals.

Regular hunger relief

Hunger is not only an emergency; it is a daily reality for many. We extend ongoing food assistance to families in economic difficulty through monthly ration packs and community food drives, so that support is sustained rather than occasional.

Organized food programs and feeds

Beyond individual aid we arrange direct food distribution events with hot meals for those in need. Community food drives, charity meals and feeding programs bring people together and remind everyone of the duty to care for the less fortunate.

How families are chosen

Choosing sixty or a hundred households out of a union is the hardest part of relief work, and getting it wrong damages an organization faster than anything else it can do. Our lists are built from the clinic register and from earlier distributions, weighted towards households with small children, elderly members, a disabled member or nobody earning.

Local volunteers, elders and teachers check the list before a distribution, because they know which households are struggling quietly and which have already been reached by somebody else. Every parcel is handed over in person and recorded against a name, which is slow and is the only way we know of keeping the list honest.

Where a household is on the list because of what a doctor saw at the clinic, no medical detail is shared with anybody outside the clinic team. The food program is told that the family qualifies, not why.

Ramadan: Iftar packages and Eid relief

Throughout the month of Ramadan we reach families with a simple Iftar package priced at ৳650. Our aim is to provide new clothes and food relief and to bring some happiness to fasting families regardless of their means. Packages are distributed from the AKWO clinic office at Baishmouja Bazar.

Give Zakat or Sadaqah

Qurbani

Many people choose to fulfil their Qurbani or other sacrificial donations through us, entrusting us with their contributions to feed the underprivileged. We make sure that the meat is properly distributed among those who need it most, bringing a nutritious meal to hundreds of families who rarely get one.

Qurbani distribution follows the same rules as every other program here: a written list of households, a named person responsible, and a report back to the donor afterwards.

Food and the clinic register

A large share of what our doctors see on a Friday is weakness, anemia and nutritional deficiency in women and children. Those are not conditions medicine fixes. They are conditions that a household with enough rice, lentils, oil and protein does not develop in the first place, which is why the food program is treated here as part of the health work rather than as charity beside it.

What a gift buys

Package contents are set locally each season. Prices other than the Iftar package are being confirmed by the trustees.
GiftWhat it provides
৳650One Iftar package during Ramadanthe price published by the organization

Cooked meals and community distributions

Some distributions hand over raw staples and some hand over a hot meal, and the choice is practical rather than symbolic. A household with a working stove, fuel and somebody at home to cook is better served by rice, lentils, flour and oil, which last for weeks. A crowd at a camp or a distribution point in the middle of a long day is better served by a meal now.

Cooked meals also bring people together in a way a doorstep delivery does not, which matters in a program that depends on neighbors telling us honestly which households have been missed.

Questions about food support

How do you decide which families receive food relief?

From lists we build ourselves, drawn from the clinic register and from earlier distributions, weighted towards households with small children, elderly members, a disabled member or nobody earning. Local volunteers, elders and teachers help check the list, because they know which households are struggling quietly. Every parcel is handed over in person and recorded against a name.

What is in a food package?

Staples: rice, lentils, flour and cooking oil, enough to sustain a family for weeks. Ramadan Iftar packages, priced at ৳650, add dates and the items a household needs to break its fast properly. Eid packages add festive items so that a family can mark the day. Contents are set locally each season according to what is available and what households actually cook.

Can I give my Qurbani through AKWO?

Yes. Many supporters entrust their Qurbani or other sacrificial donations to us, and we distribute the meat among the families who need it most. The distribution follows the same procedure as every other: a written list prepared in advance, a named person responsible on the day, and a report back to the donor afterwards.
