Sponsor a student

Most students here leave school for the price of a uniform or an exam fee arriving in the wrong month. A sponsorship covers that moment, term after term.

How sponsorship works

Many students in our communities struggle to afford basic educational expenses. Through our stipend program we provide financial aid to deserving students from primary to higher secondary level. A sponsor funds one student's stipend for a period, and the money is paid against the actual costs the family faces: fees, materials, exam registration and, where necessary, transport.

Students are selected by the program team from the families we already know through the clinic and the relief lists, on need and on the student's own commitment to staying in school. We are supporting 21 students under the stipend program.

You can also sponsor a seat on the free Office Applications course at the Abul Khair Computer Training Center, or a place on one of the trade courses that will be taught at the Abul Khair Polytechnic Institute.

What sponsors receive

A written report on the student you are supporting: what stage they have reached, what the money covered and whether they are still in school. Reports are anonymized unless the family has agreed to be named, as Nush'hika Akter's family did.

We do not send photographs of children to sponsors without the family's explicit permission, and we do not pass on a student's contact details.

What sponsorship does not do

A sponsorship does not buy a relationship with a particular child, and we do not arrange correspondence, visits or photographs on request. That is a deliberate choice: the student's schooling is the point, and a child who feels observed by a stranger is not helped by it.

Nor does it guarantee an outcome. Students leave school for reasons a stipend cannot reach, including illness, migration and family decisions we are not party to. When that happens we tell the sponsor and move the sponsorship to another student rather than quietly keeping the money.

Start a sponsorship

Choose an amount and write the word Sponsorship in the message field. We will contact you to confirm which student or course your gift is supporting.

Payments are processed by GiveWP. AKWO never sees or stores your card details.

Amounts are being set from real costs

We would rather publish nothing than publish a sponsorship price we have estimated. The figures in the table above are being worked out from what a term of school actually costs a family here, and they will appear as soon as the trustees have signed them off.

Or support the whole program

Stipends, the computer training center and the Academic Building are funded together.
